Review on The King’s Speech 1 The film tells the story of the man who would become King George VI, but the gentle man, reserved "spare"

to the throne who suffers from a dreadful stammer. As second in line, Bertie is confident that he will never be required to assume the role which he dreads, but as a member of the royal family he is regularly required to make public speeches, an event which both terrifies and embarrasses him deeply. Bertie's supportive wife Elizabeth enlists the help of unqualified speech therapist Lionel Logue whose unconventional treatment techniques slowly begin to instill in Bertie the confidence in which he is so sorely lacking. Things take a turn for the worst however when Bertie's brother David gives up the throne to marry scandalous American women Wallace Simpson. As the country verges ever closer to war with Germany, Lionel and Bertie's relationship is stretched to breaking point. What’s the reason that causes the Bertie’s stutter? Through the movie, it can be seen the evolution of the relationship between the king George VI and his father, brother, and his teacher, which reflects the reason that the cause of the king ’s tragedy life lies in his childhood, the lack of love. The lack of father ’s love. King’s father, George V is a stern and strong father. He loves stamp collecting, so he doesn’t allow his children have other hobbies. In fact, the royal family relationships among members not only kinship. Between George V and the Duck of York not only the 2 feeling of son and father but also the monarch relationship. We can know it from one scene after Duck of York become King George VI, his wife and two daughters to call him “Your Majesty”, and George VI clearly feels estranged. So presumably, two princes are not living with their parents in childhood, it is no wonder that there is no usually people family intimacy between George V and his sons. At the beginning of the film, George V lets Duck of York to read a section of speech text materials about Christmas speech, he stammered finished, George V looks angry. I think Bertie’s stutter maybe the main reason that George V chooses Prince Edward to inherit the throne rather him. The lack of brotherhood. From childhood, two princes never be able to live with their parents so they stick together and help each other in difficulties. But because the brother was born with the first heir to the throne, the care and love from others would be more naturally. In the film, Bertie once tells the Lionel Logue that nanny loved Edward more than him in childhood and the nanny even pinched him with the right hand. When Bertie and Elizabeth attend the banquet of Simpson, Bertie reminds his brother that get married with Simpson will hurt the dignity of the royal family, however, Edward imitates his brother ’s stuttering, which makes Bertie stuttering more and unable to speak words. It is obvious that even though they have grown up, Edward still given to sensual pleasures, I believe in two princes childhood, Edward often make fun of Bertie. All 3 these lead Bertie become more and more self-abased. The love from Logue. In order to help her husband, Elizabeth ask Logue for help. However, the first class, Logue insists address him by the “Bertie” rather than “Your Majesty”, which makes Bertie feels unhappy. So Bertie is not interested in Logue’s outlandish tactics and the first clinic also broke up. But as the story develops, Bertie finds himself reading Shakespeare’s poetry very fluently while listening to the music, so he begin to trust Logue. In subsequent therapy, Logue likes teaching his own children in general, teaching him curse foul language, singing, shouting, jumping wildly and chatting in a relaxing way. Bertie regards the Logue as a family member. In fact, Logue knows the large part of the reason of Bertie’s stutter is that he suffered from the bondage of imperial palace since he was born. So, it can be seen that Logue give care to Bertie in four steps: Firstly, establish the trust between friends rather than the relationship between doctors and patients. He tries to give Bertie the fatherly love, playing games with him, and when Bertie wants to paint the aircraft model, he guides him to tell his inner thoughts. Secondly, just like a father, Logue encourages Bertie to meet the challenge. When the king in the broadcast room to post his first wartime speech, Logue stands before the king tensely. He says, looking at him as if talking to him. Thirdly, teaching him how to put fear down, put the past down, put self-esteem down, but also lay down his pride. And when he finally finishes the 4 speech and accepts the people’s cheering, Logue retreats to the corner quietly and calls him “Your Majesty” respectfully, which is the last step, to show his another love---respect. Nowadays, in a highly physical world, alienated apathy among people let us feel isolated and helpless. People’s love are replaced by all kinds of needs, such as money, power, lust and so on. This cruel social reality caused widespread spiritual crisis and future uncertainty, after watching this film, I feel love is essential deeply. Love can overcome loneliness, love can make people live in harmony, just like the Logue’s fatherly love or Elizabeth’s love to Bertie, they finally help Bertie overcome the sense of fear and read the speech fluently. The evolution of the relationship between the king George VI and his father, brother, and Logue from The King’s Speech reminds us again that love is the eternal theme of human life, but also the easiest thing to impress people. 5
